RE-APPOINTMENT OF THE COMMISSIONER, COMMUNICATIONS SECURITY ESTABLISHMENT (CSE)

OTTAWA - The Honourable Art Eggleton, Minister of National Defence, today announced the re-appointment of the Honourable Claude Bisson, O.C. as Commissioner of the Communications Security Establishment (CSE).

In announcing the re-appointment, the Minister said, "Mr. Bisson has been diligently fulfilling his mandate to review CSE activities to determine if they are in compliance with the law. I am very pleased that he has accepted to continue as Commissioner for three more years."

In 1988, Mr. Bisson was sworn in as Chief Justice of the Quebec Court of Appeal and concurrently became the Chief Justice of Quebec. He received the Plaque of Honour from the Bar of the province of Quebec in 1994 and was named an officer of the Order of Canada in 1999.

The CSE, an agency of the Department of National Defence, provides foreign intelligence to clients of the Canadian government. CSE also provides technical advice and service to the Government of Canada to preserve the security of its telecommunications and automated systems.
